Law, Rights and Social Mobilization in a multi-level European system 16 – 17 June 2011 International Institute for the Sociology of Law, Onati Coordinator: Dia Anagnostou (Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy - ELIAMEP) On 16-17 June a multi-disciplinary group of twenty one scholars from the fields of law, politics and sociology, and from fourteen countries in Europe and North America gathered in Onati for the workshop. Having as its starting point the evidently growing salience of rights and courts in politics, it explored how individuals and social actors (particularly less privileged ones) mobilize legal norms of rights (i.e. equality and non-discrimination, various human rights, etc.), both in judicial and non-judicial arenas, in pursuit of broader reforms and social change in Europe. Of particular interest in the initial conception of the workshop and in the discussions that took place in it, was to reflect systematically on how the existence of different levels of government institutions and the multiplicity of legal jurisdictions in the EU transform the opportunities and conditions for rights mobilization to take place. This workshop was a follow-up to an earlier exploratory workshop that had been supported by the European Science Foundation in October 2009 in Athens. Intellectually, the Onati workshop proved to be a highly productive and constructive engagement as it enabled us to consolidate the initial, tentative ideas of the first workshop into a more coherent research agenda that forms the basis for a collective publication. In spite of the fact that the workshop’s program was tightly packed with individual paper presentations and group discussions, most participants felt at ease and experienced it as a relaxing undertaking. No doubt, the idyllic surroundings at Onati contributed to it. Above all, it was the hospitality of the IISL, its Director and its staff, along with their genuine professionalism and commitment to socio-legal research that made all the difference. We just enjoyed it immensely, and we are all very grateful for it.
